Introducing word roots in discussion classes - Kevin Demme

An extensive number of English words have been borrowed from other languages. Hook (1975) estimated that over three-fifths of Modern English vocabulary has its roots in Greek, Latin, or other Romance languages. However, too often, native speakers take these everyday words for granted, and for non-native English learners, vocabulary can many times seem arbitrary, with few discernible patterns. In an effort to aid students in vocabulary acquisition, some researchers (Adams and Henry, 1997; Corson, 1997; Eskenazi, 2000; Nilsen and Nilsen, 2006; Kail, 2008) have advocated introducing word roots into English classes.

This workshop will present some practical activities that combine vocabulary and discussion, and can be used by teachers to introduce common word roots to intermediate and advanced learners of English. The origins and background of some historical references that are still in today`s lexicon (eg. the Battle of Marathon, the Assassins) will also be highlighted. It is hoped that these activities will help students see some of the patterns in English vocabulary, allow them to remember more of the words they study, and also give them practice speaking.

Hamamatsu JALT Member to present in Gifu and Nagoya

From Curiosity to Competency: Intercultural Activities for the EFL classroom - Jon Dujmovich, EFL teacher & corporate cross-cultural trainer

Educators speak of using activities appropriate for each language learning stage, however, when incorporating "cultural elements", there is usually little consideration given to the learners' developmental stage of intercultural learning. Consequently, ill-matched activities can lead to reaffirmed or deeper cultural misunderstandings. In this workshop, the presenter will demonstrate incorporating culture-based activities according to learners' developmental stage, age, and language ability and will also show ways to adjust activities for learning stage appropriateness.

Multicultural Education training seminar in Hamamatsu

In Hamamatsu, HICE and SIR are sponsoring a Multicultural Education training seminar for K-12 public school English teachers on February 6th 1:30- 4:00.

Help JALT National cut travel costs

Our new National Director of Treasury, Kevin Cleary, is looking for ways to reduce JALT’s operating costs. However, he wishes to avoid imposing a top-down policy, because JALT functions primarily, and best, as a grass roots organization. Mr. Cleary wishes to put together a project team that will examine JALT’s travel costs with an eye to reducing them while maintaining JALT’s extraordinary ability to bring together language teaching professionals from around Japan.

Would you like to help formulate policy?

If you do, please notify him at treasury@jalt.org
